An increasing number of archaeologists are working with ‘digital technologies’, such as LiDAR, GIS, and photogrammetry. Although there are many recent examples, these applications are not entirely new and have existed for several decades. During the Digital Limes session at the Limes Congress in Nijmegen, it was explored whether these ‘new’ technologies have truly changed the way we study the limes. The reader is offered a critical reflection on the impact of digital tools within Roman archaeology.
